Susan Love Fitts was born in 1946 in Natchez, Mississippi. She moved to Texas in the mid-1970's and now resides in Montgomery.

A freelance writer, her articles have been published in The Houston Chronicle and other Texas newspapers. She is a member of the Woodlands Writers' Guild, SouthWest Writers, Writers' League of Texas, Poets Northwest, and the Poetry Society of Texas.


At the Woodlands Writers' Guild Conference 2001 in The Woodlands, Texas, she was awarded First Place for her poem Purple Sail, Second Place for her poem Two Faces Past, and Honorable Mention for her poem Aunt Leota. The Final Judge for the competition was James Hoggard, Texas Poet Laureate for 2000. All three poems are published in her first volume of poetry, Licking the Bones Dry  published in October 2001 by Fantasia.


Fitts also won Third Place for "Best Long Poem" in the Senior Poet Laureate Contest held recently in Springfield, Missouri. Her winning poem, Elijah, will be published in Hodgepodge literary publication and has been included in the Golden Words chapbook. Fitts' poem Fractional Heart was recently selected to be included in A Time to Cry, an anthology published in December, 2001 by Poets Northwest. She also has poems published or forthcoming in Texas Writer.


In October, 2001, Fitts was a featured author, speaker, and judge at the Ninth Annual Mississippi Delta Tennessee Williams Festival in Clarksdale, Mississippi, boyhood home of the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright. She read selections from her book as well as a poem entitled Gothic Women, written by her especially for the festival. Fitts was also a featured author at the Fifth Annual Winter's Gathering of Writers, sponsored by Barnes & Noble in December 2001 in Houston.


She recently collaborated with her husband, composer Charles Fitts on his String Quartet No. 3 (Hearts Celestial). The fourth movement includes a vocal part taken from her poem Bodies Terrestrial Heart Celestial. The world premiere of the quartet was held August 25, 2001, at The International Festival-Institute at Round Top, Texas.


Fitts is facilitator of the popular program Poetry Nite Live!, presented every third Saturday at Barnes & Noble, The Woodlands, TX. She features well-known poets on the program, followed by an open mic session. She is a regular reader in Houston at First Friday Readings and at Archway Gallery and has participated in several poetry workshops sponsored by Inprint House and the University of Houston Creative Writing Department.


Fitts is currently involved in the promotion of several conferences: the First Annual Poetry Forum sponsored by the International-Festival Institute at Round Top, Texas, scheduled for April 2002; and the Southwest Writers Annual Conference to be held in Albuquerque, NM in the September 2002. Her second book of poetry, Aphrodite Falling, is due out in the summer of 2002.
